The Creation Of A Battlefield

A Call To Battle

Iron Blog has been created in a time where ideology and politics has divided our Nation more than at any time since the Civil War. As the world of blogging grows, we find an exponential growth in the number of blogs, and these blogs bring online the division and unrest in the real world – some with thoughtful debate, others with shrill attacks. Trolls are sent to opposing blogs, flame wars rage on, disrupting discourse and bringing the quality of dialogue to the lowest common denominator. Instead of speaking to each other in debate, we rant at each other with forked tongues.

The Chairman sees a better way, a forum to allow those on all sides of the political spectrum to face each other for invigorating, thought provoking discussions of ideas. A place where two opponents can come together and rationally, honorably do linguistic battle with respect rather than contempt. The ultimate battlefield is being born, and the call to battle is sounding. What will come of it is unknown, but it is time that people of all political stripes come together to discuss the issues of the day and challenge each others’ minds. Four Iron Bloggers have been chosen to represent their parties – Republican, Democrat, Libertarian and Green. These four will face a variety of challengers, a host of bloggers looking to find the holes in their proverbial armor, to advance new ideas and stand tall with the best of the blogosphere.

Do you have what it takes to challenge the Iron Bloggers?

The Challenger

A Challenger does not need to own or maintain their own blog, but must at least be an active participant in a blog of note. Potential Challengers should submit a request to The Chairman, explaining who they are, where they post and why they want to be a combatant at Iron Blog. Those who are chosen will then be allowed to select the Iron Blogger they wish to Challenge. Depending on various circumstances, the battle will then be scheduled. The Theme Topic will not be announced until the day the battle is announced.

Challengers will be required to put a link to Iron Blog in a conspicuous place on their blog prior to battle, and are requested to keep it there afterwards, win or lose.

The Iron Bloggers

Each Iron Blogger is hand picked by The Chairman, chosen for their eloquence, wit, style, educational value and intellect displayed. While not all in the blogosphere will agree with The Chairman’s choices for these four positions, they will be respected members of their political community and will maintain the highest of decorum at all times on the Iron Blog site. Iron Bloggers will remain on until they choose to step down or are asked to resign by The Chairman for a violation of decorum or a loss of edge and status. Each battle is important for an Iron Blogger to uphold their position and remain one of the four. Vacancies will be filled by The Chairman at the first opportunity.

The Rules Of Battle

Respect, dignity and honor will be required from all combatants at Iron Blog. Battles will begin with a challenge issued through The Chairman to one of the four Iron Bloggers. Once The Chairman has announced the Challenger and the challenged Iron Blogger, the Theme Topic for the battle will be revealed. The two combatants then have twenty four hours to submit their Opening Arguments on the topic given. These are written blind, with no knowledge of what the other will say, and will shape each combatant’s side of the debate. Once The Chairman posts these, the Challenger will have twenty four hours to write their First Rebuttal, responding to points made and ideas raised by the Iron Blogger’s Opening Argument. Once posted, the Iron Blogger will have twenty four hours to post their First Rebuttal. The Challenger then has twenty four hours to post a Second Rebuttal, followed by the Iron Blogger’s Second Rebuttal within twenty four hours of that. Lastly, both combatants will post a Closing Argument in the same, blind fashion previously used for Opening Arguments – their posts will be submitted to The Chairman and posted simultaneously.

Four Judges, two liberal, two conservative chosen from the blogosphere will then score the four posts made by each combatant, with points being given not on ideology or positions, but on the strength and style of their posts. Accuracy, logic, wit, insight and reader education will all play a role in the scoring process. These Judges will post their thoughts on each combatant’s posts, but not reveal their scores. After submitting their scores to The Chairman, he will announce the verdict. In the event of a tie, The Chairman’s scorecard will determine the winner.

Announcements of combatants and the Theme Topic will be made on Sundays, with Opening Arguments on Monday, Closing Arguments on Saturday, and the Judges’ Verdict on the following Sunday, followed by the next battle announcement.

The Judges

A pool of eight Judges for each side - Right and Left, no more, no less, will be selected by The Chairman after scouring liberal and conservative blogs for bloggers and their posters who show a solid sense of fairness, equality and an open mind. For each battle, two of these eight will be activated from each side to judge the battle at hand. Any abuse of scoring or violations of confidentiality by a Judge will result in their immediate removal from the Judges Pool. In order to be a Judge, a person must be tolerant and open to other points of view. Anything else will result in a degradation of the battle and its result.

The Scoring

Each combatant will be scored in three areas. A maximum of 60 points may be earned for Substance and Soundness, the quality of the arguments made. A maximum of 20 points may be earned for each of the following other areas: Style (wit, humor, eloquence and use of the language and compelling writing), Sourcing & Education (providing valuable links to sources, little known information and other items of educational value to the reader). The maximum points a Judge may award a combatant is 100 points.

The Battles To Come

For now, final touches are being made, Iron Bloggers and Judges selected and Challengers scouted. This page will be receiving a major overhaul in the coming days from a cookie cutter design to the classy and professional product The Chairman will expect of all who compete and judge. Watch this site as big changes come!
